“While my daughter fought for her life in the hospital, I discovered that her husband was celebrating on a yacht, shouting ‘to freedom,’ but what I found later in his accounts made me realize it had never been an accident.
PART 1
‘If my wife dies tonight, we’ll finally all be able to rest.’
Don Esteban Rivas heard that sentence three times in his head as he walked down the white hallway of the hospital in Santa Fe. No one had said it to him directly. He had read it in a leaked message sent from his son-in-law Gabriel Lozano’s phone to a woman Esteban did not know.
His daughter, Mariana Rivas, had been in surgery for two hours. She arrived with a cracked skull, bruised ribs, and marks on her arms. The report said “accidental fall down the stairs” at her home in Lomas de Chapultepec. But Esteban, who had built a construction company from nothing and knew far too well the lies ambitious men could tell, immediately understood that this did not smell like an accident.
‘Where is Gabriel?’ he asked coldly.
Mariana’s younger sister, Camila, wiped away her tears.
‘He said he couldn’t bear to see her like this. He went to pray in the chapel.’
Esteban said nothing. He took out his phone and called him. Gabriel answered with a trembling voice.
‘Don Esteban… I’m destroyed. I’m asking God to save Marianita.’
But behind his fake sobbing, there was laughter, loud music, and the sound of clinking glasses.
‘How strange,’ Esteban said. ‘They don’t blast banda music in chapels.’
An awkward silence followed.
‘It’s just that… I stepped out for a moment. I couldn’t breathe.’
Esteban hung up. Then he called Tomás, his head of security.
‘Track him.’
Less than a minute later, Tomás turned his screen around.
‘He’s in Acapulco, sir. On the yacht you gave them for their first wedding anniversary.’
Esteban felt his blood turn to ice. That yacht was named “Mariana,” because his daughter had chosen the name believing it symbolized a happy marriage.
At that moment, the surgeon came out looking tense.
‘Mr. Rivas, we need to operate again. There’s pressure on the brain. Every minute matters.’
‘Then do it.’
The doctor lowered his gaze.
‘The husband requested that all procedures be stopped until he could speak with his lawyer. He said he doesn’t want to assume legal risks.’
Camila let out a furious scream.
‘My sister is dying!’
Esteban signed the authorization without trembling.
‘I’ll take responsibility. Operate now.’
When the doctor returned inside, Esteban called his lawyer.
‘Lupita, freeze Gabriel Lozano’s credit cards. Check insurance policies, powers of attorney, loans — everything. And buy every debt he has. Before sunrise, I want that man to discover how expensive it is to betray my daughter.’
At two in the morning, Tomás showed him a video. Gabriel was dancing on the yacht deck with his shirt open, his arm around a woman in a red dress. He raised a glass and shouted:
‘To freedom!’
Esteban said nothing. He simply stared toward the operating room where his daughter was fighting to stay alive while her husband celebrated the possibility of her death.
Then another message arrived from the lawyer: Gabriel was the sole beneficiary of a 40-million-peso life insurance policy.
Esteban closed his eyes. What was coming was not an ordinary revenge.
It was something impossible to believe…
What would you do if you discovered your daughter’s husband was celebrating while she fought for her life?
PART 2
At 4:20 in the morning, surrounded by the yacht’s luxury, Gabriel Lozano began to find himself completely alone.
First, his black card was declined in front of the captain. Then the second card. Then the third. The music slowly faded away, as if even the guests had sensed disaster approaching. Pamela, the woman in the red dress, looked at him with a mix of shame and fear.
