Sergeant Tom Davis locked eyes with Sarah, a cruel sneer spreading across his face. He looked at her simple red dress, completely dismissing her as just another defenseless civilian trying to play the hero.

“Mind your own business, lady,” Tom snapped, stepping closer to intimidate her. “You have no idea who you’re talking to. This is my zone, and what I say goes. Get back in the cab before I arrest you for interfering with a police investigation.”

“An investigation?” Sarah asked, her voice calm but ice-cold. “Extorting a hardworking citizen isn’t an investigation, Sergeant. It’s a felony. I’ll ask you one more time: return his documents and let him leave.”

Tom let out a booming laugh, signaling to his two subordinate officers. “Look at this, boys. We’ve got a social justice warrior here. Tell you what, pretty lady… since you want to stick your nose where it doesn’t belong, why don’t you pay his fine? Better yet, you can both come down to the precinct. Let’s see how brave you are in a holding cell.”

Mike, the driver, was shaking uncontrollably, whispering to Sarah, “Please, ma’am, don’t provoke him! He will ruin us both!”

But Sarah didn’t move an inch. Instead, she reached into her small handbag.
